Choosing your printer
(or why we have not recommended a specific printer)
Making your decision on a digital printer means balancing up three factors: price, service and quality. Whilst price is obviously important, it might also be important that the printer provides online help and resources — some offer video tutorials, online book design software or downloadable build-your-book software — or alternatively that you can talk to them face to face. Can you see samples? How long does it take to print a book (and send it to you if they are not in WA)? One factor to keep in mind is that printers will vary a lot in the quality of printing they do. This might be due to what machines that they have, how they are maintained and skill of the operator. Even companies with the same ‘Indigo’ digital print machine may not produce the same quality. Printers aim at different markets: some offer high quality coffee table books, some make hand-bound art books, and others specialise in more everyday albums. The paper they print on will also vary and makes a significant difference to the final look of your book. In most cases, ‘you-pays-for-what-you-gets‘, so ask around and investigate your options thoroughly.
